Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs)
Standard Deep Learning uses continuous numbers (3.14159). Neuromorphic chips use Spikes (0 or 1, but with a timing component). Information is encoded in the timing of the pulse, not just the magnitude.
The Efficiency Gap: 100x Better?
For "Dense" tasks (like multiplying massive matrices for an LLM), GPUs are still king. Neuromorphic chips lose here. But for "Sparse" tasks, Neuromorphic wins. Example: A Drone watching a warehouse.
GPU Approach: Reads every pixel of every frame, 60 times a second. Burns 50 Watts. Battery dies in 20 minutes.
Neuromorphic Approach: Only processes pixels that change (movement). Ideally burns milliwatts. Battery lasts for hours.
Intel Loihi 2 vs. IBM TrueNorth
IBM pioneered this with TrueNorth, but Intel's Loihi 2 has advanced the paradigm by supporting "Graded Spikes" (spikes that carry a payload value), bridging the gap between pure biological simulation and practical engineering.
